DIY Herb Infused Olive Oil: How to Make Flavored Oils at Home

Posted by Addison Story on 31st Mar 2026

Two Ingredients. Endless Flavor. One Beautiful Bottle.

Herb infused olive oils are one of those kitchen projects that feel far more impressive than they actually are. With a handful of fresh or dried aromatics and a good base oil, you can create deeply flavorful oils for cooking, dipping, drizzling — or just displaying beautifully on your counter.

The secret? Starting with a bottle worth showing off. Our Olive Branch Recycled Glass Pour Spout Bottle was designed with exactly this in mind. The embossed olive branch motif looks stunning filled with golden infused oil, and the precision pour spout means no drips, no mess.

What You'll Need

Tools:
– A clean, dry glass bottle with a pour spout
– Measuring cup
– Small saucepan (for the warm method)
– Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth

Ingredients:
– High-quality extra virgin olive oil
– Your chosen herbs, spices, or aromatics (see recipes below)

Four DIY Infused Olive Oil Recipes to Try

Each of these works beautifully in a 16 oz bottle. Make one or line up a set of all four.

1. Roasted Garlic & Rosemary
Mellow, savory, and endlessly versatile — the crowd-pleaser.
– 1 full head of garlic, peeled
– 2–3 sprigs of fresh rosemary
– A few black peppercorns
– Extra virgin olive oil to fill

2. Basil & Lemon
Bright, herby, and fresh — perfect for pasta, fish, and salads.
– Handful of fresh basil leaves (or dried)
– Zest of 1 lemon, dried slightly
– Pinch of sea salt flakes
– Light extra virgin olive oil to fill

3. Calabrian Chili
Fiery, deep, and complex — great for pizza drizzle or eggs.
– 4–6 dried red chili peppers
– 3 cloves garlic, smashed
– ½ tsp smoked paprika
– Extra virgin olive oil to fill

4. Thyme & Orange
Floral and warm — elegant on roasted vegetables or cheese boards.
– 5–6 sprigs fresh thyme
– Dried orange peel strips
– 1 bay leaf
– Mild extra virgin olive oil to fill

Two Ways to Infuse

Cold Infusion (slowest, best flavor)
Add your herbs and aromatics directly to the bottle. Pour in room-temperature olive oil until full. Seal and leave in a cool, dark place for 1–2 weeks, shaking gently every day or two. The longer you wait, the more intense the flavor.

Warm Infusion (ready in hours)
Gently heat your olive oil in a saucepan over low heat — around 150–180°F, never boiling. Add your aromatics and let them steep off the heat for 20–30 minutes. Allow to cool completely, then strain through a fine mesh and pour into your bottle. Use within 2–3 weeks.

Food safety note: Fresh garlic or herbs in oil can harbor bacteria if stored at room temperature for extended periods. For longer shelf life, use dried herbs or refrigerate. When in doubt, make smaller batches and use within 1–2 weeks.

Tips for the Best Results

  • Always make sure your bottle is completely dry before adding oil — even a drop of water can cause spoilage.
  • Use whole dried chilis or garlic cloves rather than chopped — they look gorgeous through the glass and are safer for room-temperature storage.
  • Label with the infusion date so you always know when to use it by.
  • A set of three bottles — garlic, herb, and chili — makes a beautiful countertop display. Corral them on a small wooden board or tray.
  • For gifting, tie a small sprig of fresh rosemary to the neck of the bottle with kitchen twine. Simple, beautiful, done.

The Perfect Homemade Gift

A set of homemade infused oils is one of those gifts that feels genuinely thoughtful — because it is. Pick up a few of our Olive Branch bottles, infuse two or three different flavors, and you've got a hostess gift, a birthday present, or a holiday set that no one will forget.

The recycled glass and embossed detailing make the bottles genuinely decorative even before they're filled — and the precision pour spout makes them practical enough for everyday kitchen use long after the oil is gone. Available in multiple finishes.
